As a graduate student and audio researcher, I have written and contributed to multiple publications for the Audio Engineering Society and the Society for Music Production Research. Currently, one is available for access through the AES, and two more projects will be presented in late 2024.
Research
This paper introduces preliminary research into a low-cost, reproducible, and scalable system for creating virtual mixing environments (VMEs) suitable for use in higher-education settings. The system uses industry standard software (SketchUp, Unity, Wwise, Max) to model and create a VME of the Creative Research and Technology Lab (CReaTe Lab) at the University of Victoria, Canada. First-order ambisonic room impulse responses (ARIRs) were taken and used to provide the source for convolution. Head tracking was implemented using the GyrOSC iOS app and a custom Max patch. The system was evaluated using subjective listening tests where level, panning and reverb matching tasks were performed by the test subjects. Results indicate the VME performed similarly to standard mixing modalities for level and panning tasks. Reverb testing was inconclusive and requires further investigation.
